Anyone have any idea what 「おもしろい」のゲームデザイン: 阿佐ヶ谷GARAGE says? 🙂

  1. The following is a very rough quick-and-dirty translation. The part in [[brackets]] I’m uncertain of; I might have misunderstood what the author was saying there.

“Fun” Game Design, a theory of creating entertaining games, originally by Raph Koster.

I had intended to buy this, but I found a copy at work, borrowed it, and read that.

There are illustrations on almost every page, so I thought I could finish reading in a couple days, but the exceedingly abstract topics and logical presentation thereof made this a very difficult book for a hard-headed person like myself. I don’t think I understood more than half of the book.

I don’t think this is a book you can read on the train. You need to settle yourself down and read each sentence carefully.

The subtitle is unfortunate. It says, “A theory of creating entertaining games”, but I felt this was too easy-going. [[As I’m uncertain of my understanding of the contents, I think that it is best if I don’t go into their details.]] Anyway, it looks as if I need to reread it.

At any rate, I want to write my impressions carefully.

  2. Cool, thanks! It’s amazing how confusing the machine translation comes out…

  3. Google’s translation of the final line has a certain je ne sais quoi, however.

In each case we would like to try writing thought securely.

I mean, really, don’t we all?

  4. Out of curiosity, what language is it in? All I see is question marks. I really need to find some kind of ‘display xxxxx languages’ feature in Firefox.

  5. It’s japanese…

  6. Jefftool: If you’re using Windows XP, you should be able to install Japanese font sets off of the Windows install CD (from what I understand). This is, unfortunately, why I don’t have the bloody font sets; my Windows XP discs are all on another continent.

  7. I just know that

    おもしろい

means “It’s interesting”. Pronounce like “omosiroi” 🙂

  8. I believe that’s part of the Japanese title of the book. The explanation was here.

  9. 「おもしろい」のゲームデザイン is the Japanese title of your book.

阿佐ヶ谷GARAGE is Asagaya Garage, the name of the blog that’s doing the entry about your book!

D’oh! I lost mine the last time I moved. I assumed it’d be something I could easily download, though? I’ll rummage around, though it’s obviously not something required.

Though, JeffTool? Ouch, Tess. Ouch. (It’s okay. I’ve been called worse both mistakenly and on purpose. 😀 )
