Usually, San Diego has lovely weather. It’s one of the first things you notice when you step off the plane. Winter is two weeks of rain in February or March.

When it has bad weather, it usually goes from “perfect” to “weird” in short order. As in this case:

Hail on the grass in San Diego

Yes, that is hail in my back yard. It came down hard for about 15 minutes, then stopped. Kristen tells me we had a small recurrence today.

Temperature? 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit. Go figure.

  2. Ahh, I thought that was hail. We were in SD last night for a concert and while walking back to our car the rain suddenly became a bit “crunchy” under my feet.

(Mooooooo…) Email from my mom:on 80 over the summit at Truckee a single line of cars is going, no trucks, and only cars with chains, including 4 wheel drive. This afternoon there was whiteout conditions on the road up to Mt. Hamilton. It snowed about an inch in San Francisco late this afternoon. 880 was closed this afternoon due to a truck hijacking on the slippery, icy road stopping traffic, and when they got the truck straight the cars couldn’t move because of no traction on the snow and ice. The are continuing to put sand on the highway every hour. Santa Cruz and vicinity is under severe storm warning for high winds, hail, and thunder and lightening. 280 was closed for awhile this afternoon due to hail and unsafe driving conditions. And there is no excitement at our house. No snow. No hail. No wind. No thunder. No lightening. Not like Berkeley! They had it ALL this afternoon. They were showing the kids and parents out having snowball fights. Oh yes, in SF they showed the kids sliding down the hills. They knew those hills were good for something. Stay tuned- – – – – Whoah. There’s something seriously wrong with that weather.(Post a new comment) moxie21 2006-03-12 02:25 am UTC (link) Yea, no action here either. And chance of small hail. Not at all unlike San Francisco at this time of year, in fact.(Reply to this) (Parent) raccaldin36 2006-03-12 05:32 am UTC (link) https://www.raphkoster.com/2006/03/11/hail-in-san-diego/(Reply to this) Log in now.(Create account, or use OpenID) […]

  4. Six Inches of snow fell overnight in Glasgow, Scotland last night. Now we’re a bit more accustomed to snow here, but not so much in March. Its meant to be spring!!!!

  5. We get those hail storms in Sydney, too. A few weeks after I arrived, there was a hail storm so big that there was about an inch or two of accumulation in some places. A bunch of kids dragged out their snowboards, to see if they’d work on the hail.

  6. We got some hail up here in Northern California, too. Trackback says there was snow in Berkeley. Wacky.

  7. Yeah living in the High desert for the past 6 year’s Ive yet to see snow in my back yard untill the past weekend. It’s crazy for the area that’s for sure
