Neither is new, but I think I haven’t blogged ’em before:

Google moves into virtual worlds, which pretty much everybody I know in the Bay Area has been talking about for weeks now… and

this article about the PCD Music Lounge, which is notable because it’s a custom virtual world designed for a band as a promotional tool.

  1. Hmm A online world based on… the real world. That seems kinda weird but may just be interesting to see how it plays out with dating services and other things. Could walk around the streets of LA before you even arrive in person and be able to navigate the city without a map fairly easily.

  2. The Google thing is getting old it’s been so heavily blogged.

I tried the PCD Lounge last week. A couple of things from my experience:

    – the cell-shaded avatars looked pretty good.
    – the music stations were interesting (the Interscope logo(?) caught my eye).
    – there were some minor UI issues but it’s still in beta.

I was impressed by the effort considering what it was.

  4. We live in a strange time when three-day-old news is considered “old”. 🙂

  5. I was actually thinking the same thing as I typed that.

  6. […] The new Google SketchUp is for the do-it-yourselfer, the hobbyist — really anyone who wants to build 3D models for use in Google Earth. Go ahead and model that new kitchen, or deck, landscape your virtual garden, or impress your teacher with a roller coaster or medieval castle. When you’re finished, place your model in Google Earth. There! The beginning of a virtual world. Sources: Raph Koster and Terra Nova […]
