Uru returns

CNet has an article on how GameTap is going to bring Uru Live back. Certainly unexpected… I assumne it will have a serious impact on the Uru communities in There, for example.

A group in SL made a nice effort in recreating a part of the Uru/Myst world in SL. They did a really good job of capturing its essence and pulled off a fairly Myst-like adventure to boot.
Uru was not my cup of tea even though I was a big Myst (and sequels) fan. But, there’s clearly a big following who DID like Uru. It will be interesting to see what happens once it’s resurrected.
I wasn’t a huge Myst fan, not playing any of the sequels, but I did play Uru and found it quite fun. I never got to try out the multiplayer component, however the setting certainly seems quite complementary to the MMO model. I’m pretty psyched now to try out Uru Live, assuming other people are there…
Also, GameTap is a really great service, and I am constantly surprised at how they are able to offer so much content for the relatively small monthly price.
I didn’t see any mention about new content. Did I miss something?
Without a continual supply of new content, it’s nothing more than a pretty chat room. The positive feedback cycle of content attracting people of personality XYZ, whose then form a community, that attracts more people (or personality XYZ), is necessary.
GameTap I think is realizing the limitations of its original vision, beginning with their announcement of having new custom content at all. The Long Tail can work, but it’s gotta be the right content 🙂
Not sure if Uru is it. Also not sure what really is, in terms of gaming. So much iteration with improvements relavent to the platforms means recognizable old games arguably better today. It’s good for nostalgia, but even for the reduced monthly fee?
