I dont know who he is but he seems to be a decent and clever fellow. There was one thing among his posts that caught my attention and makes me wonder if it has a sollution other than to be adopted as a standard. Related to how all the coming mmorpg’s appear to be the same:
Since the vocabulary of the developed, advanced or matured players in an mmorpg has to be very large is it even possible to change this particular UI issue?
It would appear reasonable to me that adopting the buttons, text and icons UI as standard is an evolutionary stage of the genre or maybe even the whole industry. The dark backside of adopting this standard appears to be a way to shed interest from people who ask for innovation. As a result only those who really can project themselves into “being the avatar” will understand the value of innovation within the genre while everyone else who not yet has achieved or experienced that level of immersion in an mmorpg will look elsewhere for “the new thing”.
How would you change the visuals of UI and Avatar in an mmorpg so it looks innovative without being broken?

If memory serves, Daniel James is (one of) the people who made Puzzle Pirates. I think I saw him at a MUD-Dev Conference… *looks for the correct answer* Yay, I’m right.
Correct, he is CEO of Three Rings, which does Puzzle Pirates. Prior to that, he was involved in one of the Sierra version of Middle Earth Online. Prior to that, he was involved with Avalon, one of the first pay-to-play text muds. I do believe he started out as a player back on the original British MUDs.
Ah very cool. Almost everyone I’ve talked to has been relatively intrigued/surprised by Puzzle Pirates. Three Rings, Game Gardens, and Puzzle Pirates all combine to make a very inspiring mix to me. I can’t wait to see what he writes.
[…] Thanks to Raph for the heads up that Daniel James was blogging. His blog, located here is clean, to the point, and will no doubt be worth following. For those not in the know – Mr. James is the CEO of Three Rings, creators of Puzzle Pirates and most recently Bang! Howdy. If you’re quick you can mosey on over and become a part of the open beta. I managed to hop on and play a few games myself, and it’s shaping up to be a well done little game. I’ll withhold all other judgment until I can hop in and play more than that, but I will say at first brush it is definitely worth at least checking out. It isn’t a true MMO, in fact the meta-game behaves as a ‘battle.net’ style interface (with a few things added on), but that makes it no less enjoyable. If you’re the type who can get in to a good action/strategy game, go check it out. […]
