Table Tennis Revenge

Long ago, I blogged about how I suck at Rockstar Table Tennis and my kids were crushing me.
The tables (ha ha) were turned yesterday, as they played the real thing for the first time. David had trouble hitting the table, and Elena had trouble hitting the ball on a serve.
Then I showed them a real pool table, since they’ve been playing Bankshot Billiards too.
So they’ve decided to go back to the videogames. And I have realized that there’s no point in getting the real thing at home, because there’s still nobody to play with (well, Kristen and I could play pool, I suppose, if I want to lose all the time).

Hrm… I love playing pool. If you get a table, get a really nice table! At that private venue I told you about, I’ve spent countless hours playing on their Olhausen Cavalier II.
Too bad you’re in Southern Cal. I LOVE pool and table tennis! I can’t even begin to count how many lunches and breaks I spent in the break room at the old Origin Austin building.
The purpose of pool, table tennis, and foosball is not to compete. It is to be in the same room with other people who don’t suck.
Idiots and losers generally don’t play these games. The people who play them are fun people, people who drink and carouse and trash-talk and in general are entertaining to accompany. This is also true of most sports, but these less-physical games have a lower barrier to entry and a smaller downside risk. Nobody really gets hurt playing these games. It doesn’t take a long time to learn them, and it doesn’t take a lot of practice to become a competent player.
Like many MMOs, the purpose of playing is not the game itself, but the community and social structure that exists around it.

There are times when the objective of playing pool is simply to have fun.
There are other times when the objective of playing pool is to win.
I like it when you write stuff like this about your kids. 🙂
I love table tennis. I haven’t played in a while, but I used to enjoy playing in tournaments in college. I like both the intensity of competitive play as well as the zen-feeling you get just hitting the ball around.
