1. Keynote address by Matt Bostwick, SVP, Franchise Development at MTV Music Group
Matt Bostwick, SVP, Franchise Development at MTV Music Group will deliver the day one keynote address on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 in New York City. Bostwick leads the team responsible for Virtual Laguna Beach and Virtual Hills, which have earned acclaim in the media/entertainment industry for creating environments where viewers can live out the story arcs and programming they see on-air.
The platforms combine television, 2D web and 3D virtual communities in one integrated system and are also helping define next-generation media and advertising models. today is the last day of pre-registration for ETech I made the final decision not to attend. The combination of being too busy and really liking the feel of the $2k it would cost to go as it sits in my pocket was enough to forgo the possibility that Raph will do something interesting

So, is this conference going to focus on real opportunities for marketing, or is it going to be a tool for the Linden press machine to try and convince Toyota that having 300 people (or whatever) interact with their in-world exhibit represents a marketing success?
I am heartened to see Timo from Habbo, and Matt Boswick speaking. I’m not so heartened to see that the greatest number of speakers come from Linden and their cronies (Electric Sheep, etc), who are all too happy to pump up the value of marketing in Second Life beyond all reason so that they can make a buck.

Actually, at this point, ESC, Anshe Chung, and so on have all diversified well beyond SL and Linden. ESC did the stuff for MTV, Anshe Chung does a lot of content creation for IMVU, and so on.
Matt, if anything, Linden Lab isn’t represented at a very high level at all, and isn’t listed as a sponsor.
It looks more like a vehicle for There and ESC branding and positioning than anything else.
I guess what my question would be, even having a conference like this in my own city, what the value-add would be for spending $595 to hear the same people I can read on blogs any day of the week.

Not to get off topic…
You know whats completely irritating? Most of these conferences (and I have/will buy tickets this year for 3 different conferences) do not have a category of tickets that are priced specifically for Start-ups/New Companies. It would be helpful, and benificial for the conference organizers long term to facilitate the presence of small companies/start-ups, and probably increase thier revenue through volume sales.
Its hard enough sqeezing blood out of turnips, but getting hit with high priced conference tickets, for something that may not have a huge return, just plain sucks.
I will say one thing for the GDC though, their tiered ticket structure is really something conference organizers in and out of the gaming industry could learn from.
