EA makes avatars

Here’s the press release — but it seems to boil down to ‘make avatars of yourself to play in virtual online versions of popular game shows.’

I suspect that quite a lot of the next wave of virtual spaces will be this sort of micro-spaces, designed primarily to milk an established media IP and try to build tighter consumer lock-in. But I also think that this wave will end as there’s more push to make something more expansive out of all of these small bits.

What’s more interesting is that EA is doing this as its next avatar initiative. It fits well with the more media-centric approach that EA seems to be taking as a company — the desire to be a media company, not just a game company, basically.

  1. Makes sense for EA — if media companies are going to expand into the game/VW space, they might as well make a push in the other direction. Endemol seems like a good partner, with its broad international presence and portfolio of game shows — not to mention a lack of strict ties to any specific broadcast or cable networks.

Also: I am terrified at the thought of Virtual Howie Mandel.
