The march of social online worlds just won’t stop! Papermint Online Society features paper-thin characters and very bold colors. But it’s in German. I don’t have someone within six feet who speaks German. Also, 20MB client download…

Thanks, Alice!

  3. Sprechen sie nicht Deutsch??? Schade.

  4. The best thing about these foreign language offerings is that besides the fact that they offer a different cultural perspective, for people who want to practice another language, this stuff is great. So many people speak English that it’s increasingly becoming a distinct disadvantage for many Americans to only be fluent in one language.

I’ll have to give this a look… specifically bc I’d like to head back over to Germany soon and visit some family. I could use some serious practice. Thanks for pointing it out.

  6. A friend of mine is conversationally fluent, and I know enough to be able to say that I’m from America and would rather speak English. Most Germans have conversational English skills better than my German, so maybe we’ll give it a go.

  7. They game’s kind of neat, there seemed to be a low populace. Avatar customization is limited, it seems like theres a wide wardrobe to pick from. I asked another user how to make money and he said:

“buy online, or sell plants to people who buy online” apparently theres little plants strewn about the world that you can pick up and sell. They do…. something.

Theres player housing and player establishments, but understanding what to do and where to start has that stingingly painful metaverse feel to it. And it’s especially hard in a foreign language.

On the plus side, my profile let me describe myself in at least 2 ways using little icons provided. I went with the cartoon condom labeled “Sex!” and the cannabis leaf labeled “Hippie”. The gun icon was tempting but I couldn’t translate the word below it 🙁

  9. The description says: papermint is like a tour to a sunny island which takes to a friendly world of interpersonal interaction: a colorful world to chat, to play and to experience.

Under “welt” (world) it describes different locations (right now three island). The starting location metaphor is an “orphanage”. You can rent appartments, there are boutique, bars and discos. It mentiones “game houses” which offer brain twister type of games (I don’t know another appropriate translation for “denkspiel” (denk = think, spiel = game)). It mentions minigames as well for in-between.
