Whoohoo, congrats to Mark Finn (whom I know from the Texas SF/F scene, Tryptophan/Turkey City stuff).
And I told you that Privilege of the Sword was really good. 🙂 I need to track down some of these others… The novel nominees:
-
- Lisey’s Story, Stephen King (Scribner; Hodder & Stoughton)
-
- The Privilege of the Sword, Ellen Kushner (Bantam Spectra; Small Beer Press)
-
- The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch (Gollancz; Bantam Spectra)
-
- The Orphan’s Tales: In the Night Garden, Catherynne M. Valente (Bantam Spectra)
-
- Soldier of Sidon, Gene Wolfe (Tor)

Thanks for the tip, I need to pick up Soldier of Sidon, I really enjoyed the earlier two books in that series. Wolfe is one of the few writers of historical novels to realize that the protagonists don’t just view the world through the same eyes as we do today. His take on ancient Greece was challenging and unique.
I find Gene Wolfe’s writing to be impenetrable in general, but entertaining in some cases.
The Knight and The Wizard are two I did enjoy a lot.
Hey, Thanks, Raph! It’s stupid and corny, but it really *is* an honor just to make the nominations list. This year’s list is a strong one. Don’t know which way it’ll bounce.
