VastPark is a highly interesting project. You can create 3d worlds, have stuff stream in from the Web, and post it as a URL. It looks like a single-player, proprietary client implementation.

They started closed beta back at GDC, and just went open beta. If you get to the “old site” section, you can read their developer Wiki and see videos of worlds that early testers made.

  1. Interesting indeed. It supports HTTP messages so in that sense it’s potentially as “multi player” as, say, a web page. You could probably make a quite passable turn-based game with it if you hosted the game server yourself.

  2. Hi Raph,
Thanks for the coverage. Right at the moment we’re in the process of releasing a wider amount of our platform. It aims at being a platform that can be used for creating and running your own 3D games, virtual worlds and machinima puppeteering. What’s unique right now is that: 1) we’ve been working for a long time on a distributed content syndication system: sort of RSS on steriods that can work in with future media formats such as MPEG21 as well as current formats; and 2) users can join their worlds together seamlessly with other worlds so that players will be able to migrate between them without any interruption. We’d already prototyped this back in 2004-6 in different fashions but hadn’t solved the content distribution issues. Hey, I don’t know about you Raph, but I’ve found 3D as a true UGC medium difficult to solve in a non-proprietary way. I think what Second Life has done is extraordinary but I wasn’t very interested in just supporting content made in a proprietary tool. I know you’ll be doing some interesting stuff with Area-E. I’m guessing that you’ll be offering a lot of open game play elements that are easy to “cook up” into a game. We’re not so focussed in that area, but we are wanting to make a strong push towards a really easy to use multi-user 3D web of worlds paradigm where content is portable and reusable. We’ll be regularly releasing new builds of a Creator tool and a 3D Browser very soon and rolling out new features each month.

I’m planning on attending the Virtual Worlds Fall conference, so if anyone is going and wants to catch up then email me at vastpark.com.

    Cheers,
    Bruce
