The Romantics sue ‘Guitar Hero’ maker – CNN.com
The band’s attorneys tell the Detroit Free Press for Thursday’s edition that Activision properly secured permission to use “What I Like About You,” allowing it to record a cover version.
But they say by creating an imitation so much like the Romantics’ original, the California-based company infringed on the group’s rights to its own likeness.
What I don’t like about you, Romantics, is that you seem to have missed the whole point.

I’m sure this is just for promotional purposes. An injunction that might take the game off the shelves? Better get your copy now! The Romantics had this to say: “The game provides an experience so close to that of being our lead guitarist, we just felt our rights had been violated. Or something.”
Who are The Romantics?
Yet another band I’ve never heard of. I guess I’m not the target market for games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band.
The Romantics, who?
That sounds more like an insult. 😉
Hrm? Activision secured the rights to record a cover of the song, but not the rights to use the likenesses of the band members. The article is badly written; however, the article does point out that “[a] copyright claim is not the issue for the Romantics.”
The Romantics: “What I like about you! You keep me warm at night!” Punk/pop band, mid-80s.
The game does not use the likenesses of the band members. All the songs in Guitar Hero that were covers were all done as soundalikes so that players felt like they were playing the original (ironically, these days, the games are so popular that master tracks are used for most of the songs). That’s the whole point of re-recording them. The games actually feature documentaries on how it’s done.
What’s that screenshot in the article? Speaking of what’s what in the article, there are too many conflicting statements to actually determine what’s up.

I agree Raph, completely missing the point. Talk about flattery that the Romantics are completely missing… Rather than recapturing the moment an possibly encouraging another version in a diffenrent venue / format they have taken the defensive. A very old school DRM maneuver. Too bad, I really like the Romantics!
