Metachat is on Facebook now too
(Visited 9757 times)You can get it here.
This actually connects to the same chat world as the one on MySpace, and the one on our forums. So it’s all one big happy cross-SNS virtual worldlet in Flash.
We also got a bunch of forums interested in trying to integrate a Metaplace world on their forums… it’ll be one based on Metachat to start with, though it can of course change later. It’ll be their own world, though.
Last time I mentioned this little app on here, people challenged the question of whether it was actually a world or not. Well, it supports hundreds to thousands, there’s physics, a sense of place and space, you can kick a soccer ball, interact in real time… the background could scroll, and you could have avatars instead of profile pics. So… close enough, to my mind. 🙂
BTW, we’re going to start spotlighting community members and their worlds. The first spotlight is up now — Tachevert (of WorldIV) and his world “Danser,” which is one of my favorite MP projects so far.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
I still get Error #2048.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.13) Gecko/20080311 Firefox/2.0.0.13
I can only connect with IE…
Actually, I just tried IE 7.0.5730.11.
After refreshing the page that had the error in IE, the Metaplace app displayed, but I received Error #2048.
It felt like a world to me.
1. It loaded — it took time to load (key for world-sensation).
2. It had avatars that could move around and kick balls.
3. It had things that another avatar could come and do and you’d hear it (piano).
Waiting for it to have apartments that save overnight, however.
This is really interesting, Raph. I really like the /gosee command. I don’t know if that is something entirely new to the world of chatrooms, but I thought it was more interesting than simply pasting in links.
Is there a place to submit bug reports at this point in time?
Bug reports can go here:

I don’t know if /gosee is new or not. 🙂
Error #2048: it must die. We will make that a focus tomorrow.
Pretty slick.
I notice that you require login when someone hits the app, but don’t require (or even seem to suggest) that they add MetaChat to their profile. How come?
I’m on a coding vacation this week working on the Facebook game I’ve been meaning to write for months. I spent some time last night making the game the “sign in” dialog on the way to the “install” page. I’m just curious why you went the other way.
This is pretty neat, though now I have to find a picture that looks good at both the size it is in my Facebook profile and at the little thumbnail avatar size.
Is there a version that was made by someone with a functioning “y” and “o” key?
It should be putting it on your profile automatically.
I am not even quite sure what you mean…
In our case, we have the fun restriction that we have one single wrapper that works on Facebook, MySpace, and really, any other arbitrary website. The commonalities between Facebook and MySpace are… few. 🙂
Heh. We’ll change it at some point, we have gotten the message loud and clear. 😉
It’s not. 🙂
When a user hits your canvas page and doesn’t have a session, you’re redirecting them to http://www.facebook.com/tos.php?api_key=&etc. If you want them to install the app at that point, you need to redirect them to http://www.facebook.com/add.php?api_key=. At that point they’ll be prompted to add the app to their profile.
Your actual API key obviously appears in those URLs. I chose my delimiters poorly.
Thank you! 🙂
Thank you!
Virtual World?
Back in the day- 1998 we called it a FLASH game and in 1996 it was a Shockwave game…
and in 2001- a shockwave 3D game….
You all remember them? dont you..?
RIP macromedia and the hollywood flash /games portal crowd.
Show us the money…:)
And remember those who died for your expense accounts….
love, the lingo guy
Flash and Shockwave = client rendering technologies.
Virtual world = server-side simulation.
[…] Some have questioned whether an app like this should really be considered a virtual world, but Areae President and Founder Raph Koster defends it: "Well, it supports hundreds to thousands, there’s physics, a sense of place and space, you […]
Shockwave 3d – MU server games…. 🙂 too many to list from 2000-3
and I think you do a “disservice” to those who pioneered online gaming for over a decade by calling flash and shockwave- “rendering technolgies” they have been used by those who PAY for web based games for advertising–by the folks you must have mentioned in your vc plan to your angels:) to produce pretty much the same games I see here.
But hey, use any words you like, from what we have seen so far, the only thing new ” is your press agents calling it a virtual world”
But how does “server side” simulation answer my real question?… HOW a developer NOT in your founders group, makes any money with your business plans…
If an open tool for 999.00 from macromedia couldnt drive a portal game
(ad driven) system- ( a profession) to make much money for more than 100 game developers who got the “hilighted spots at the portals”,- some barely survived even after money up front from MM– how does metaplace really shares its growth with the “user generators” ?
Even SL/Linden labs is now under attack for 10 an hr “content” hires to build server locations to “compete” with their own paying customers. How does user generated content supporting your ad sales really work out for the amature or indie “game developer”
The more I read /hear about this business, the more it begins to sound like a “HOW YOU CAN GET RICH IN REAL ESTATE TOO” type cd deal…
Other than “virtual world” meme speak. How is a indie content maker served by this system, and how do we know you, like Linden Labs, wont claim control or business “only ” after WE the people create the “valuation” for your companies websites eyeballs?
I know all about the cool Shockwave multiuser games — many operating quite profitably today. I am not minimizing what they accomplished at all, and I don’t know why you think I am.
We’ve actually talked a fair amount about this already. The answer, since you can bridge to any payment system you want, is basically “any way you want” — including using the billing system we’ll provide, or not.

Those who pioneered online gaming for over a decade, huh? You mean guys like, oh, I don’t know—Raph!?
You do realize that Raph was the driving force and lead designer behind Ultima Online, which is what I think Richard Bartle has called the progenitor of the modern MMORPG. Have you even heard of Richard Bartle, the creator of MUD1, the progenitor of virtual worlds? Or Randy Farmer, who co-created the first graphical MMOG, the first avatars, and many other firsts?
Yeah, they’re both on Areae’s advisory board. It’s odd to say that the people backing Areae, who practically started the whole online gaming shebang, are somehow doing a disservice to both themselves and the people who came after.
By the way, Shockwave and Flash are rendering technologies.
That doesn’t even make sense. Venture capitalists are venture capitalists. Angel investors are angel investors. Two different breeds with lots of money to toss around.
I’d tell him to read the Metaplace blog, but I can’t seem to find a link to the archives to point him to.
You sort of have to cheat, Michael.
