GDC Vault – Social Mechanics for Social Games [SOGS Design] is a link that takes you to the GDC Vault where you can watch a full video of the presentation, with the slides side by side, for free.

Of course, you didn’t need that, right? Because you already paid to get access to the utterly awesome GDC Vault. 🙂

There are a couple more free talks released today as well, including the AI rant and an inside look at the Humble Indie Bundle. You can check out all the free talks here.

  1. GDC Vault is awesome, but I don’t know what they’re thinking with the $400/yr individual subscription fee. I paid $225 to get the vault with my GDC pass, and as an independent, even that was a stretch, but it gave me a year’s access to the videos which were interesting. I don’t know why anyone would subscribe yearly at that rate. Maybe every 4 years.

  2. For $400, I want two lifetime subscriptions and a big purple polar bear to ride around on.

Oh, wait… damn. See, this is why I’m a player, not a designer.

  3. That was/is a brilliant presentation, Raph. Kudos. I’d say something pithy and longwinded but watching that while the ABC Nightline presentation of strategies for defeating alQaeda as alQaeda attempts to regain momentum after losing it’s main guy is just too… serendipitously tragic.

    Brilliant, though. Well considered.

  4. Very nice. Exactly what I wanted to hear these days.

  5. I watched both videos. They are chocked full of good stuff. I didn’t have a moment of boredom, and I’m a natural bore.

There was one thing in particular that really stuck out to me in the AI conference. Kevin Dill of Lockheed Martin talked about AI reuse. This is one of several things I’ve thought for a long time that needs to be done. Building a code that is reused from game to game, and built up over time as games progress.

Another thing is what you touched on, Raph. GM input into games. I’ve felt that tools that make it easy for GMs (or EMs) to instantly add content to games, so that they can carry out events, even on the fly. I’m sure many games have some now, but this is another thing where building up a code base for reuse seems important. It should not be a difficult task to set things up, nor to add on the fly by having pre-set …sets..of things to call upon. The most interesting “content” in games is the events that happen. Players love this stuff for several reasons, and “rewards” is not what I’m concerned with so much here. Action is what I’m after here. Lots of it, continuously, all the time. Stories that don’t bog down with waits for the next setup, and can be adjusted by player actions on the fly, pretty much, or the next day.
