If you have been to E3 lately, you have seen the awesome stuff that the Videogame History Museum puts together for its shows. If not, check out this video:

But now Gamasutra is reporting that Time May Be Running Out For The Videogame History Museum, because they have been unable to raise the money via Kickstarter to continue what they are doing by opening an actual physical museum.

They’ve got 12 days to go, and are only halfway there. If you want to keep this charity going and help them towards their goal of having a permanent museum location, please visit their Kickstarter page and donate!

  1. Thanks for posting about this, Raph.

Back when I was at Project Horseshoe talking about legitimacy in games, we decided one of the important steps was to preserve game history. There have been a few archive projects at universities, but having a museum for common people to go to would be nice.

I’m currently working at a startup so I could only afford to throw in $10, but I hope other people realize the importance of something like this.

  2. Large swaths of motion picture history were lost because the film disintegrated or was destroyed in the period that it was too old to be marketable and not old enough to be historic.

Videogame and virtual world history faces a similar fate. Our digital archives are subject to “bit rot”; outdated physical assets are junked. Some systems are already considered collectors items — although mass produced by the millions, only a few survive in working order.

Complicating the matter, the few histories of the industry have gaps and errors that cause those of us who lived through it to grind our teeth.

The better we can document and preserve our legacy as gamers, the better that our gaming descendents can understand their roots (and maybe, just maybe, future designers can avoid repeating some of our more egrigious errors).

  3. Well, they reached their goal. Still 5 more days, still time to give a little more!
