What I Play

Maybe Free is the opening track on my CD After the Flood. It's a blues-rock tune in double-dropped D. This recording features:

Stretch and Mat produced, engineered, and mixed.

You can download it here if you like. This is from the final master, but it's a pretty low-quality mp3. To get a high-quality version, visit MP3.com

Maybe Free

For her I stole gas at an empty exit
Mississippi cops chased me to the county line
Got my window cracked so the air comes in
It whispers in my ear with its cranky whine
My hand slips off the gearshift and onto her knee
Maybe on the road to being free
On the road to being maybe free

She said her husband once gave her a wedding ring
She said all she got now was stories and lies
So we took my wallet and some courage in a six-pack
And decided to drive till we both turned wise
With the stink of sweat and refineries
Maybe on the road to being free
On the road to being maybe free

And she talked in her sleep about missing someone
And she woke she couldn't meet my eyes
She said to me once when her face was a window
"You're the kind of guy I could maybe like..."

I asked her what there was that we were looking for
Somewhere to the west where the sun hits the ground
She said, "Maybe all there is is the light, the light
spilled across the earth, pennies waiting to be found.
When I find a treasure with no claim on me,
I'll be on the road to being free.
On the road to being maybe free."

solo

She slipped from our motel room and left a note
About how she couldn't get any farther away
That each time she ran, the leash got tighter
She barely got far enough to have to stay
Too many guys westbound in beaten Chevies
For her to be on the road to being free
On the road to being maybe free

At night when the light falls over her pillow
I know all I've done is crazy insane
And when the last sunset escapes my chasing
Bury me in the westbound lane
Bury me in the westbound lane
